About Benjamin Zephaniah
In his early 20s, Benjamin Zephaniah moved to London after being born and raised in Birmingham. Furthermore, he released his debut poetry collection, Pen Rhythm, in 1980.
While the book achieved good sales, Zephaniah gained his greatest fame through his performances.
In his early writings, he employed dub poetry, a Jamaican literary form that subsequently gave rise to the eponymous musical genre.
He also performed alongside The Benjamin Zephaniah Band. Actor Zephaniah appeared in the BBC drama series “Peaky Blinders” from 2013 to 2022.
By declining an OBE in 2003 due to its association with the British Empire and its history of slavery, he made headlines for speaking out against issues like education and racial abuse.
He was a candidate for the Oxford University Poetry Professorship and served as Writer in Residence at the Africa Arts Collective in Liverpool.
The University of Central England honored him with a Doctor of Letters, while the University of Staffordshire and the University of North London awarded him honorary doctorates.
