Shawn Johnson dad, Doug Johnson is an influential American illustrator, graphic artist, educator, scenic designer, and theatrical producer, was born in Toronto, Canada, but has made New York City his home since 1968. 

Who is Shawn Johnson?

On January 19, 1992, in the city of Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States, Shawn Johnson was born to her parents, Doug Johnson and Teri Johnson. 

Doug Johnson, Shawn Johnson’s father, worked as a farmer, and he began sending his daughter to gymnastics classes when she was three years old.

When Shawn was going through any stage of her life, her parents were there to cheer her on and offer support.

Doug Johnson’s Education and Career

Douglas L. Johnson, a professor at the University of Chicago, earned his doctoral degree in 1971. 

After spending a year instructing at Southern Illinois University, he moved to Clark in 1972 and remained there until he was promoted to the position of Emeritus Professor in the year 2010.

At Beijing Normal University in China, which is the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology (ESPRE), he holds the position of Fellow. 

Throughout his career in geography, he has concentrated on the history and ecology of North Africa and the Middle East regions.

Both his master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation, both completed at the University of Chicago, focused on the history of nomadism as well as its implications for space. 

His work primarily focused on researching North Africa and the Middle East and educating students about the region’s complexities.

He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Libya, Sudan, and Morocco and has held visiting appointments at the Middle Eastern Center at the University of California, Berkeley, and Al-Akhawayn University in Morocco.

He is also a co-author of the chapter that covers the Middle East and North Africa in the 11th edition of World Regional Geography, A Development Approach, which Pearson published in 2015. His studies have focused on topics such as desertification and land degradation, management of arid lands, pastoral nomadism, and the cultural ecology of animal husbandry.

He contributed to the second edition of the book titled “Land Degradation: Creation and Destruction” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007). Between 2003 and 2006, he was a coeditor for the journal Geographical Review. 

Currently, he is participating in the editorial process for the International Journal of Disaster Risk Science.

The recent passing of Shawn Johnson’s father-in-law comes as a shock because Shawn Johnson’s father is still alive. 

The family of Shawn and Andrew East has stated unequivocally that their father passed away on December 27, 2022.

Even though Shawn Johnson’s father, Doug Johnson, was battling an illness of which the specifics were unknown, the sources reported that he is still alive.

Andrew East and Shawn Johnson shared their grief and sorrow following his untimely passing. His loved ones have expressed that they think about him often and pray for him. They continued by saying that they would keep him in their memories.   

For the benefit of those unaware, Andrew East played American football in the past. He participated in football while he was a student at Vanderbilt University, and ever since then, he has played for several teams in the National Football League. It was the Washington Redskins football team that he played for.

Doug Johnson has had experience teaching students in grades kindergarten through twelve both in the United States and Saudi Arabia. He is the author of nine books, some of which are The Classroom Teachers Survival Guide to Technology, Developing the Creativity in Every Learner, Learning Right from Wrong in the Digital Age, Machines are the Easy Part and The Indispensable Librarian.

His articles have been published in the journal Educational Leadership published by ASCD and Library Media Connection. In a given month, Doug’s Blue Skunk Blog receives an average of more than 50,000 visitors, and his writing has been published in more than forty books and periodicals.

Over 200 United States and worldwide organisations have benefited from Doug’s workshops and presentations. He has held various leadership positions in local, state, and national organisations, such as ISTE and AASL.

Doug Johnson Achievements

  • During the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, he illustrated album covers, magazines, posters, and advertisements for various music-related products. Since the late 1970s, most of his creative energy has been directed toward work associated with the theatre, such as designing posters, graphics, scenic design, and executive production management. 
  • Doug Johnson and the companies he is affiliated with have been a major presence on and off Broadway for close to 40 years, during which time they have produced dozens of shows and won several awards. 
  • Doug Johnson has been honoured with five Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and the Society of Illustrators 1986 Ham Award for Outstanding Achievement in Illustration.
