Did the pastor resign from Willow Creek Chicago? On Sunday, the senior teaching pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington announced his resignation, citing a lack of honesty on the part of the church leadership.
In April, Bill Hybels, the main teaching pastor of the church he founded 42 years ago, stepped down. After The New York Times detailed claims of sexual harassment against Hybels last Sunday, Steve Carter took over and expressed horror.
Carter said that he disagreed with the elders’ handling of the allegations of decades-long sexual misconduct by Hybels with women, including church employees, that the Chicago Tribune originally reported in March.
The Tribune reported that the accused perpetrator made sexual comments, gave prolonged hugs, planted an unwanted kiss, and extended invitations to hotel rooms.
The newspaper also discovered an allegation of a long-term, consensual affair with a married woman who later recanted her story.
Willow Creek’s elders and an outside law firm conducted multiple investigations regarding Hybels, as reported by the Tribune, but ultimately acquitted him of all misconduct.
“Since the first women came forward with their stories, I have been gravely concerned about our church’s official response and its ongoing approach to these painful issues,” Carter wrote on his blog on Sunday.
After several heart-to-hearts with our elders, it’s clear that we’re on opposite sides of the spectrum about what Willow Creek really needs for progress.
They think something else is best, but I hold a different opinion. It doesn’t mean I’m right and they’re wrong, though.
But I have to go down the road that I think God has for me, which now leads away from Willow Creek.
In July, church officials delivered a series of public apologies, with Carter at the helm.
On his blog, he said that he had shared his opinion with church elders that the church had botched its handling of the allegations against Hybels and the subsequent investigation.
He claimed to have apologized directly to “several of the victims” for treating them and their loved ones.
Heather Larson, the Senior Pastor, issued an apology from the pulpit, and the elders of Willow Creek Church published a written statement online.
The church that Hybels started in a rented movie theatre 42 years ago and grew into one of the country’s most famous and prominent megachurches is now completely independent of him.
Larson kept silent about Carter’s resignation during Sunday services but later wrote to members after consulting with regional college pastors to share her sadness.
She stated, “For the past few weeks, our team has been processing with Steve, and we’ve all been hoping and working toward a different outcome.” We wish we could say, “We would have personally shared this information with you as a church family.
Many members and watchers of the church, however, applauded Carter’s courageous move, saying it sent a message that the church’s leadership had not changed course or addressed the charges against the organization’s founder adequately despite the changing public response over the previous four months.
Vonda Dyer, a former director of the church’s vocal ministry, told the Tribune that in 1998, while on a trip to Sweden, Bill Hybels called her to his hotel suite, He kissed her out of nowhere and proposed that they run Willow Creek as partners.
“I think Steve Carter’s words and actions are very brave and shed greater light upon the leadership dysfunction that exists among the staff culture at Willow Creek,” she said.
For decades, many have claimed that Bill Hybels abused his position of authority and engaged in sexual misconduct.
On Sunday, The New York Times published allegations that Hybels inappropriately touched his former executive assistant Pat Baranowski, starting with a back rub in 1986.
The publication reported that the pastor instructed his secretary to search for pornographic videos, and watch them in his presence while he wore his robe.
Hybels has refuted these claims.
Carter stated that he submitted his resignation weeks ago but continued to lead until the church’s authorities found out how to make the decision public.
On Saturday night, he brought Ira Glass, a host on public radio, onstage to be interviewed in front of the church.
On Sunday morning, a worship leader stepped in and informed the congregation that Carter had been sick backstage and could not perform a second time.
Carter announced his departure later that day.
With his soul “at odds with the institution,” Carter said, “At this point, I cannot, in good conscience, appear before you as your Lead Teaching Pastor.”
