A Five Stones church pastor resigns from his position after being found to have plagiarized sermons over the summer.
His church and the pastor both believe that this behavior disqualifies him from serving as a pastor.
Pastor Greg King, an SBTS alumnus, addressed his congregation this morning via a prerecorded segment.
He explained that despite having been reprimanded and disciplined in the past for preaching another man’s sermons.
Pastor Greg continued the behavior and began delivering plagiarized sermons over the summer.
Statement from the pastor
He said: “Hey, Five Stones! Can you believe I’ve been in ministry for 25 years? 12 of those years as the teaching pastor here. It’s been a privilege to touch so many lives with the gospel. But today is tough because I have to admit that this summer, I’ve been preaching someone else’s message. The elders and I discussed this, and it’s not the first time. We decided it’s best for me to resign. Luckily, Five Stones has always had multiple leaders, not just one personality. I want to make it clear that I support the elders.”
Why do they go by the name “Five Stones”?
The name of the chapel is derived from the well-known tale of David and Goliath in I Samuel 17.
David defeated the enormous Goliath with the use of five smooth stones and a spirit-inspired combination of bravery, ingenuity, and simplicity.
Five Stones exists to exalt God and make Him famous in our city, just as David gave God tremendous glory.
The history of Five Stones Church
After serving as a pastor for 12 years in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pastor Rich Kao and his family felt called to the West Coast to create a global, multi-generational church.
In November 2003, Five Stones Church was founded. Guided by God, they chose to relocate to Vancouver, a diverse and cosmopolitan city known as a gateway to Asia.
They carefully evaluated multiple locations including LA, San Fran, Seattle, and San Diego. They moved in July 2003 with their wife Memie and their four kids.
The organization acquired a new Sunday morning “home” in Douglas College (New Westminster) in April 2005 as additional families joined the fledgling church. For the following five years, the congregation met there.
It made it simple for families from all over the city to get to the church’s services because of its prominent location, high visibility, and proximity to the sky train system.
The church expanded in May 2008 to include administrative buildings as well as Dream Centre, a Burnaby-based charity that houses donations.
While Sunday services were still held at Douglas College, this served as Five Stones’ headquarters from Monday through Friday.
God provided the church with a permanent site in downtown New Westminster, the first capital of British Columbia and the original Vancouver, in February 2010 after several years of searching and investigating.
This allowed Five Stones to perform services and house all of their operations in one convenient location.
It took a long time and a lot of effort to find a zoning building that would permit this.
God ultimately provided a spot above and beyond what they could have anticipated after much prayer and perseverance.
The Five Stones family has found a great new home at 612 Columbia, which blends a strong sense of heritage with an urban ambiance.
The church chose to relocate to a nearby school in the summer of 2023 because it was outgrowing the space at 612 Columbia and needed to be able to expand.
On September 10th, 2023, the church moved into a location at Lord Kelvin Elementary School in downtown New Westminster that God had made available. The church is still looking for a permanent location.
