Due to First Baptist’s unspoken rule that divorced men cannot be ministers or deacons, the Stanleys’ miserable marriage became public in the 1990s, generating church problems.
“If my wife divorces me, I will stop immediately,” Stanley said in 1995.
“We detest it when things like these happen, but our church is progressing nicely along,” deputy deacon chairman Jerry Beal told an Atlanta publication. Our pastor forever.
