Stephen’s father left the military shortly after Stephen was born and began working as a designer and draftsman for an aerospace company.
After that, the family relocated to California. Bryan, Stephen’s younger brother, grew up to become an aircraft designer, carrying on his father’s career path.
His mother’s painting-proficient grandma served as another source of inspiration for him. In addition, he performed music while attending “Savanna High School.”
He took scuba diving courses at the same time, which bolstered his desire to work as a marine biologist.
Hillenburg studied marine science at “Humboldt State University” in California after graduating from high school.
In college, he also studied painting to get ready for a career in both art and marine science.
