Ermey dedicated eleven years of his life to serving in the Marine Corps. Following his recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, he earned an appointment in the aviation support branch.
From 1965 to 1967, Ermey taught drill at India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. The next year, he arrived in Vietnam with Marine Wing Support Group 17.
Over the following year and a half, while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Ermey would serve two tours alongside his crew.
Despite sustaining numerous injuries during his time in Okinawa, he received promotions before being medically retired from the military in 1971.
R. Lee Ermey’s acting career
Ermey relocated to the Philippines after serving in the Marines, where he enrolled at the University of Manila to study acting and criminology.
Call it coincidence or destiny, but Francis Ford Coppola, a director of motion pictures, was filming “Apocalypse Now,” while Ermey was a student in Manila.
Ermey was brought on by Coppola to portray a helicopter pilot, and because of his time in Vietnam, he was able to advance to the position of official technical advisor.
He played supporting roles in “Apocalypse Now” for a few years after filming was over.
However, Ermey landed a part in 1987 that would come to define his acting career.

Ermey demanded that Director Stanley Kubrick stand up when he was being spoken to, having previously been turned down for the role he was trying out for.
Consequently, Kubrick cast Ermey as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in his most recent film, “Full Metal Jacket,” a Vietnam War comedy.
Ermey starred in 60 movies after “Full Metal Jacket” became successful.
