Sherman was born in the United States on July 22, 1943, to Juanita and Robert Cabot Sherman Sr. in Santa Monica, California. 

He enrolled at Birmingham High School and started singing and forming a dance band.

Sherman began playing the trumpet at 11 and eventually learned to play 16 other instruments!

Following his high school graduation in 1961, Sherman attended Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California, to further his education.

When Sherman was chosen to perform as one of the house singers on the variety program Shindig!, his television career began to take off.

Then, from 1968 to 1970, he appeared on Here Come the Brides, followed by Getting Together, a The Partridge Family spinoff about two songwriters, from 1970 to 1971. 

There were numerous guest appearances throughout the 1970s and the middle of the 1980s.

Still, Sherman’s series regular part in the 1986 television program Sanches of Bel Air would be his last before he portrayed himself in an episode of Frasier 11 years later.

Sherman’s Hollywood career was “the best of days” for him, he told Tulsa World in 1997.

Sherman changed directions and decided to pursue a career in public safety after being a teen star.

After learning CPR to be ready in case one of his children needed help, he decided to pursue training as an EMT and found that he enjoyed it. 

In 1989, he established a volunteer program that trained police officers for emergency events and provided medical services at various events.

In 1992, Sherman joined the Los Angeles Police Department and was given the duties of chief medical training officer. According to Tulsa World, he declined to accept payment for that assignment.

According to The Washington Post, Sherman said teaching these officers how to treat injuries was a labor of love in 1998. “Knowing that these individuals are out there, assisting someone, saving somebody else’s life, is the best feeling in the world.”
